The Military Wife was scribbled, in my terrible handwriting, outside a café in Spain on an overcast day. I had the video of Green Day’s Wake Me Up When September Ends in my head, and it was approaching Remembrance Sunday. This story was the result of that.
In hindsight, perhaps a better title would have been A Military Spouse to more fairly represent those left behind when our armed forces go off to war or to keep the peace. But then I would have felt the need to change the main character, and would have ended up rewriting the entire thing, so I didn’t.
Either way, this doesn’t detract from the hard work our armed forces do, nor belittle their loved ones – even if I do wish that war – and peace-keeping – were things that aren’t necessary.
